The town of San Juan del Sur was established in time with the California Gold Rush in the mid 1800 and worked as a major port for gold transportation. From the booming city of San Francisco the gold was taken to San Juan del Sur onboard ships and then transported to Lake Nicaragua on land before it once again was loaded onto ships taking it down the San Juan River and straight out onto the Atlantic Ocean, with Nicaragua taking a hefty customs fee for all of it. The infamous William Walker, whose plans still is somewhat unclear, secured the little town in 1855 and erected a small fort there, although William Walker was able to seize the major part of Nicaragua he was soon defeated but the fort is still there, looking over both the Pacific Ocean and San Juan del Sur. The town was also attacked by US forces on March 7, 1984, while supporting the Contras in the 1980s.
