Rivas Nicaragua

Rivas is the name of the city, the municipality, and department located on the isthmus between Lake Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean in the south-western part of Nicaragua, bordering to Costa Rica. The department of Rivas has really had an economical rollercoaster ride over the past hundreds of years but seems to finally have stabilized itself, and with the proposed Nicaragua Canal the area might see an explosion in investments and development. Continue to read for more information about the Rivas.

Rivas Nicaragua – Some info

The city of Riva is a smaller settlement of around 40.000 people and is located midway on the isthmus. The city mainly serves as a transportation hub and is not very friendly towards strangers. The department on the other hand has 145.000 inhabitants and has some exquisite nature perfect for tourism, which naturally is the main source of income for the entire area. There are also a lot of plantations producing sugar canes, rice, and grenadine together with cattle ranches on the small isthmus thus making it somewhat crowded in some areas.

Rivas Nicaragua – History

Although the city of Rivas only dates back to 1835 there have been settlements of various indigenous tribes in the area since 606 AD. The Spanish visited the area in the 1520s leaving it with a population of mixed Creole, Indian, Mulatto and Spanish which later, in 1607, built a catholic church for the entire area. In 1855 the infamous William Walker stormed the city of Rivas but was repulsed by the school teacher Emanuel Mongalo, becoming a local hero. Rivas has a history of various invasions, wars and dictators but has in later years settled down as a upcoming tourist area in Nicaragua.

Rivas Nicaragua – Tourist attractions

The city of Rivas is not interesting in this context since it is a rather slow and small town with very few tourist attractions, instead it is the beaches of the Pacific Ocean along with the nature along Lake Nicaragua that is by far the most interesting parts. Along the Pacific coastline surf camps and smaller resorts has begun to blossom and in some areas even been conquered by larger developments such as Rancho Santana. There is even a huge undertaking in the small town of Gigante where the earlier picturesque fishing bay is transformed into a marina capable of receiving cruise ships.

Rivas Nicaragua – Nicaragua Canal

As early as in the colonial era there were plans of constructing an inter-oceanic canal through Nicaragua, connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific, and it was not until the construction of the Panama Canal in 1914 that the project was abandoned. Over the years though, it has been understood that there is a need for a larger and better canal to secure steady transport routes and once again is the Nicaragua Canal interesting. Now how does that affect Riva some might ask, the thing is that a future Nicaragua canal will make use of one of the already existing rivers that flows from Lake Nicaragua out to the Atlantic Ocean and then cut straight through the Riva area, making it, and the country one of the most important travel routes in the world.
