Laguna de Perlas

Laguna de Perlas is a city, a lagoon and a of the RAAS, Región Autónoma del Atlántico Sur, department on the southeast of Nicaragua. The area was once British and therefore most people here have English as their first language. Because of the difference from the rest of Nicaragua this area is poor and has developed slowly. It is still worth a visit though because of the fantastic nature and the possibility to experience a poorer part of the world which is fluent in English. Continue to read if you want to learn more about Laguna de Perlas and what you might experience there.

Laguna de Perlas – Some info

First of all Laguna the Perlas is a lagoon known as Pearl Lagoon separated from the Atlantic Ocean by only a thin strip of land. The city which bears the same name is the largest city in the municipality which also bears the same name, it is also the political centre of the affected area. The depertment, Región Autónoma del Atlántico Sur, in which the municipality is situated is one out of two autonomous regions in Nicaragua which further explains the low rate of development. The entire department is 27.407 km² and has around 380.000 inhabitants, the capital is named Bluefields and is an important port which have suffered both economical and infrastructural damages caused by hurricanes in the last couple of years.

Laguna de Perlas – Culture

In many ways the east of Nicaragua, and with that including Laguna de Perlas, is very different from the west. The western parts of Nicaragua being old Spanish colonial territory with indigenous tribes mixed with Spaniards have its culture while the east, being a former British protectorate with a major Creole population, has its own history and tradition. These two very distinct different regions did not mix very well at the beginning but is still a part of the same country and has in later years formed a more solid unity with the Spanish language gaining ground in the eastern parts of Nicaragua.

Laguna de Perlas – Tourist attractions

Although Laguna de Perlas is a nice little town next to a beautiful lagoon surrounded by spectacular nature there really is not very much for the regular tourist to do, a few hotels and restaurants exists and that is it. The struggle between development for tourism or keeping the integrity of the natural life is ongoing and there is no way to tell how it will end up. The town is great for those wishing to make shorter daytrips around in the area to experience both the nature and the lagoon up and personal though, and accommodation can be arranged to fit the plans of the visitors.

Laguna de Perlas – Getting there

The simplest way to get to Laguna de Perlas is by boat from Bluefields. The infrastructure connecting the capital city of Nicaragua, Managua, with the Atlantic coast in the east is scarce at best and for those travelling there the only recommendation is to do so by plane. There are scheduled flights leaving airports for Bluefields every other day or so. It takes a little work getting there, but it might be well worth it once arriving at the destination.
