Laguna de Apoyo
Both of the departments Granada and Masaya shares Laguna de Apoyo which is the largest lagoon in Nicaragua. It is situated inside the crater of a volcano and most of it is protected as a nature reserve. The crater was created hundreds of thousands of years ago when the volcano had a violent eruption and although it still causes some seismic activity it is considered to be dormant. Tourists simply love Laguna de Apoyo, simply because the area really have taken the tourist industry to heart and know what people who comes to Nicaragua are looking for, a not to crowded place with spectacular nature and fun activities.
Laguna de Apoyo – Some info
Not only is Laguna de Apoyo situated in both the Granada and Masaya department but also almost precisely in the middle between Managua and Granada. The lagoon covers 48 km² and is the largest lagoon in Nicaragua, its deepest part is measured to 200 m making it also the lowest point in all of Central America. The shores of the lagoon are surprisingly accessible and there are a lot of buildings down at the waterfront.
Laguna de Apoyo – History
The crater in which Laguna de Apoyo is situated was created by a violent volcanic eruption hundreds of thousands of years ago and was slowly filled as rainwater started to gather inside of it. Today the volcano is considered to be dormant but is still guilty for seismic activity once and awhile. In the year 2000 a minor earthquake underneath Laguna de Apoyo caused the water to actually slush from side to side, creating the myth that the water was boiling. The volcano does still have some underwater thermal vents which keep the water hot no matter what weather there is.

The area around Laguna de Apoyo is under development and there is a lot of land for sale for those that wish to make a life there. There have already been a lot of luxury houses constructed in the area. Already established is most of the things a tourist could wish for, hotels, hostels, restaurants, pharmacies and a lot of tourist activities. All around Laguna de Apoyo it is possible to go scuba diving, kayaking, sports fishing, hiking, volcano boarding and in the evening enjoy a nice barbeque down by the beaches.
Laguna de Apoyo – Wild life
The surrounding area of Laguna de Apoyo contains hummingbirds, toucans beautiful butterflies and such exciting animals as howler and white-faced monkeys. But for some real excitement one needs to take a look under the water. Because of the obvious isolation of Laguna de Apoyo the life in the waters has evolved separately from all others and there are still some undiscovered species in the waters which scientists today are studying.
Laguna de Apoyo – Getting there
Getting to Laguna de Apoyo is very easy since it is situated so precisely between two of Nicaraguas most important cities, Managua and Granada. It is an easy walk from both of the cities for those who like to hike. For lazy people there are both buses and taxis willing to take you to the vicinity of Laguna de Apoyo for a reasonable price.
