Estelí Nicaragua
The department of Estelí is situated in the north of Nicaragua, close to the border to Honduras. The department’s capital is also named Estelí and is the second largest city in northern Nicaragua, just after Matagalpa. The area saw some heavy fighting during the war between the Sandinista National Liberation Front and the Contras but has since then recuperated and is now a strong part in the Nicaraguan economy. Although not an area teeming with sights and tourist attractions, Estelí can be well worth the visit if you know what you want. Read more and learn what it is that makes Estelí special.
Estelí Nicaragua – Some info
Estelí is a Nicaraguan department which is situated in the far north of Nicaragua although not bordering to Honduras. The department covers 2.335 km² and has around 220.000 inhabitants, most of which supporting themselves by growing tobacco and producing cigars. The hand rolled cigars from this area is considered to be one of the top three in the whole world and produces a lot of money in exports. The capital of the department is also named Estelí and is a centre for the export of cigars. The city is also the site of the only traffic light on the Pan American Highway between Managua and the Honduran border.
Estelí Nicaragua – History
The area in which the Estelí department is situated has been inhabited by indigenous indians for a very long time although there are not many signs of it left. Instead it is the modern history of Estelí which is interesting and contains both development and destruction. After the Cuban Revolution in 1959 a lot of Cubans fled their home country to find a safer place for themselves and their families, among them Cuban cigar makers which found their way to Estelí. The area there proved to be excellent for growing tobacco and the industries started to blossom. But all of that came to a halt when the war between the Sandinista National Liberation Front and the Contras was ignited in the 1980s. A lot of the earlier developments were destroyed but luckily the war ended and today it is a calm area with both a lot of tobacco growers and cigar industries.
Estelí Nicaragua – Tourist attractions
In many ways neither the department nor the city of Estelí have very much to offer visiting tourists. There are a variety of hotels, hostels and restaurants to choose from and as in most of Nicaragua is the nature spectacular. The city has no real sights but is quite beautiful and nice to just stroll through. One might think that there really is no reason at all to visit the area but that is not true, there is one reason. For those that have fallen in love with the cigar a visit to this area would be a shame to miss since it here is possible to try a cigar straight from the hands of a cigar roller. No cigar shop in the world can offer that kind of service.
