Corn Islands Nicaragua
The Corn Islands are two small Nicaraguan islands which are situated around 75 km outside the eastern coast of Nicaragua. They are a part of RAAS, one of two autonomous departments in the east of Nicaragua. During the colonial times the Corn Islands were frequently visited by both pirates and buccaneers but today the population contains of a rather more peaceful fishing community. In later years tourists have found their way to the two islands, having an explosive affect on the development of the islands comforts while preserving much of its untouched nature. The Corn Islands are two islands known as Big Corn Island and Little Corn Island, the larger one have around 2000 inhabitants while the smaller only has around 250. The population has for a long time supported themselves fishing but in later years more and more people are going over to the tourism industry. The population of the islands has a huge lead on the rest of Nicaragua since most of them both speak Spanish and English fluently and there are also a lot of people that knows the indigenous language Miskito.

Corn Islands were colonized a long time ago when Miskito Indians paddled their way there from the mainland. The waters were great for fishing and a small tribe settled on the islands. During the colonial ages the rather hilly Corn Islands was a perfect hiding place for many pirates and buccaneers. There are supposedly treasures hidden on the island but no solid proofs have been presented as of yet. From 1655 until 1894 all of eastern Nicaragua, including Corn Islands, was a British protectorate but as the British left the area was claimed by the Nicaraguan government. The Corn Islands was then, in 1914, leased to the USA for a period of 99 years, the lease was dissolved on April 25, 1971 though and the Corn Islands came back into the care of Nicaragua.

The Corn Islands is probably one of Nicaragua’s best tourist areas since the islands have proven to be as much of a paradise that most foreigners dream of. The sun is high in the sky, the beaches consist of beautiful white sand and the water has a clear turquoise colour. Both of the islands are discrete in their development and the lush nature is allowed to take up room. The waters around the islands are also perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving since there is a beautiful coral reef just outside the islands and there are also a lot of exciting sunken ships to explore. So if you want to spend your vacation in paradise, Corn Islands is the way to go.
Corn Islands Nicaragua – Getting there
Getting to Corn Island is quite easy since airplanes leave from both Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, and Bluefields, the capital of the department, several times a day. Do not expect a jetliner though because the landing strip on Big Corn Island is both short and small, you will most probably be sharing a bush plane with a crate of chickens.
