Chinandega Nicaragua
The Chinandega department is situated in the far northwest of Nicaragua and borders to both Honduras and the Pacific Ocean. The department capital bears the same name and is a major producer of liquor in Nicaragua. The small city El Realejo was once a major port in the area but is no nothing more than a larger fishing village and a lot of memories. The area has suffered from some terrible natural disasters in modern time and is still struggling to come back. The department Chinandega has around 440.000 inhabitants and covers an area of 4.926 km². The people mostly support themselves by producing agricultural wares such as sugar canes, bananas and peanuts. The capital of the department is also named Chinandega and is the commercial centre of area with a lot of breweries transforming the locally grown sugar canes into internationally reputated liquor which then is exported. The area is known to be one of the hottest in all of Nicaragua and it stays that way all year round, it does not stop tourists from finding their way to the beaches of the Pacific Ocean though.
Chinandega Nicaragua – History
The city of Chinandega was founded by the Spanish during the colonial era and was a major commercial hub, mostly because of the very fertile soil which surrounded it. Even the name Chinandega, which means Place Surrounded by Cane in the indigenous language Náhuatl, hints on just how much sugar canes there were grown there. The major port of that time was El Realejo which had an exploding development until the beginning of the 17th century when frequent pirate attacks forced the Spanish to abandon it, transforming it into the small and quaint little town it is today. Both the cities are built in old colonial style and many of the houses have a very old architectural style.

The Chinandega department is more or less what Nicaragua should be all about when it comes to tourism. Most of the beaches towards the Pacific Ocean are close to undeveloped, the nature is spectacular and although the cities are not specified for tourists there are a lot of comforts and activities for them. The department also contains some volcanoes including San Cristóbal, Nicaragua’s highest volcano stretching 1745 m up towards the sky. The area is also known for its food since a lot of shrimps pass through the area and gets picked up by the locals. All in all, Chinandega is more or less the tropical paradise that many dreams of.
Chinandega Nicaragua – Getting there
Getting to the city of Chinandega is very easy since paved roads connect it with both Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua, and León, by some known as Nicaraguas knowledge centre. Public buses travel these roads on a regular basis and are quite cheap. Otherwise it is possible to even hitch a ride since the roads are usually full of traffic.
