Carazo Nicaragua

The department of Carazo lies in the west end of Nicaragua, bordering to the Pacific Ocean, and the people support themselves by growing coffee and handling internal tourism. The area is favoured by Americans trying to find an alternative to their life in the USA. The capital city of the department is Jinotepe, a rather modest city with few tourist attractions. San Marcos on the other hand is a much better known city within the American society and is also home to many Americans which have emigrated. Continue to read and learn more about Carazo and why it has such an impact on the American society.

Carazo Nicaragua – Some info

Carazo is a Nicaraguan department that covers 1.050 km², has around 180.000 inhabitants and is situated on the far west of Nicaragua. Although bordering to the Pacific Ocean the beaches are close to undeveloped for tourism and because of that many Nicaraguans have erected summer houses there. Otherwise the department consists mainly of hills which are used for the growing of coffee. The capital of Carazo is Jinotepe, a small town with not very much to offer. In San Marcos on the other hand lies the Ave Maria College of the Americas which is a branch of the highly respected Ave Maria College in Ypsilanti, Michigan, USA. Many American students come here to study abroad making the city rather americanised, handling products that you would not find anywhere else in Nicaragua. Because of this San Marcos is a favourite among Americans settling down in Nicaragua, in a way they are not tourists but emigrants taking up the Nicaraguan lifestyle as their own.

Carazo Nicaragua – History

A quick search on the internet shows exactly what this area is known for, coffee. More or less undeveloped before the Carazo department exploded with small and medium-sized coffee plantations during the time period of 1880-1930. These helped stimulate the economy and should have been of great help if not civil war and dictatorship came in the way. Today the coffee plantations of the Carazo department are still important for Nicaragua’s economy but the explosive development of those past years is long gone.

Carazo Nicaragua – Tourist attractions

Although the Carazo department does not seem very friendly towards tourists it is simply because the population of Nicaraguan does not want it to be, simply because it is the vacation destination for many Nicaraguans living on the western side of the country. Although the beaches by the Pacific Ocean is not developed does not mean that they can not be appreciated. A lot of surfers and people who does not wish to spend their vacation in any crowded locations rent one of the houses by the beach and enjoy a wonderful time right by the beach with little to no alien tourists except themselves. In the north of the department, not far from Managua, is an amusement park for young children located. The park combines nature with fun activities and is both educational and recreational at the same time.

Carazo Nicaragua – Getting there

There are public buses frequently leaving from Managua for Jinotepe and once there a relatively good infrastructure allows you to go wherever you need to go within the Carazo department. Taxi drivers can, with the right price, be persuaded to take you all the way to the Pacific Ocean so you do not miss a second of surfing, swimming and relaxing.
