Boaco Nicaragua
Boaco is the name of both a Nicaraguan department and its capital city. The department is situated in the centre of Nicaragua and is today an important city for the entire country both for transport and production. The city of Boaco has moved around some since it first was founded, mostly because of the frequent British attacks during the colonial years. It was long considered to be a frontier town of the Spanish colonial empire. With rapid development Boaco has become an interesting town with a lot of modern conveniences oriented especially towards tourism.
Boaco Nicaragua – Some info
The Boaco department covers 4.244 km² and has a population of around 175.000. It is situated in the centre of Nicaragua and contains mostly of hills and mountains used for either growing crop or herding cattle. The department is by far Nicaragua’s largest producer of both meat and dairy products, supporting the need of the entire country and even exporting some to neighbouring countries. The departments capital city is also named Boaco but is also known as La Ciudad de Dos Pisos, The City of the Two Storeys, since there only are two places in the entire city, the park and the baseball field. The city has around 19.000 inhabitants, most of which is working in the industries and with the services that sprung up when a paved road connected the town with Managua, the capital of Nicaragua.
Boaco Nicaragua – History
The city of Boaco is actually ancient, at least by name, and its name means Town of Enchanters. Several attacks both before and during the colonial time resulted in the town being rebuilt again and again, and finally moved when British supported indigenous tribes levelled the town in 1749. The new settlement, today known as Boaquito or Little Boaco, was founded nearby the Malacatoya River but slowly moved to the area where Boaco is settled today as the river flooded the area.
Boaco Nicaragua – Tourist attractions
Boaco as a tourist city is a rather amusing idea since there are no real sights to see or any real natural attractions for which Central America otherwise is famous for. There is a public library from 1979 containing works of many Nicaraguan poets and writers but otherwise there is nothing of real interest. Instead the town has invested in making the stay pleasant for the tourists offering a wide variety of restaurants, hotels, hostels, casinos, nightclubs and other kinds of entertainment. The service is much better than in the rest of Nicaragua and with the right kind of marketing this small city can grow into something bigger than just a huge processing plant for meat and dairy.
Boaco Nicaragua – Getting there
The city of Boaco is really trying hard to become the centre of attention with both paved and dirt roads leading to many of the most important cities in Nicaragua. Public buses travel both to and from Boaco frequently from a lot of different cities, including Managua, so it is safe to say that getting to Boaco is very simple indeed.
